Kids Bedroom Furniture

Should your child be included in the decision making process when it comes to picking out kids bedroom furniture? This may seem like a complicated question to answer, but it really isn’t. Your kid shouldn’t have complete control over the pieces of furniture that will ultimately make it into their bedroom but they should be allowed to provide you with direction and input. After all, if your kid doesn’t like their room they won’t feel comfortable in their own space. This could cause problems when it comes to situations later on in life.

When kids are under the age of 5 they are less likely to feel a need to participate in such decisions, but as soon as they start learning more things in school and are actively asked to join in group activities they will become more interested in making decisions on their own. If you want to find the right kids bedroom furniture set that will grow with your child so you won’t have to reinvest in redoing their room for many years, then including them in the decision making process is a great idea. Most kids bedroom furniture sets may not last from year 5 to year 18, but they usually last at least 10 years before your child will want to do a complete overhaul of their space.

By allowing your child to invest their imagination and time in the creation of their space they will, even unconsciously, own it and feel a greater responsibility to maintaining it. When a child loves spending time in their room playing or doing homework then it will be less of a chore for their parents. You will no longer have to argue with your child to get them to go to their room.

Not only can your child give you input when you are choosing kids bedroom furniture, but your child can also help in the renovation of their new room. Kids are great at helping with any demolition that needs to be done, like tearing out old carpet, and enjoy tasks like painting the walls because it allows them to release some of their own creativity. When it’s time to add accessories let your child determine the placement of the items. This goes back to the idea of doing activities that help them become invested and interested in their space.

How can you help your child help you decide on the kind of kids furniture to use in the room? Let your child look at the same design magazines that you’re looking through. Go online with them and look at all of the home decor retail websites that sell kids bedroom furniture and ask them which ones they like best. Ask why they like it so you can determine what attracted their attention in that particular scene. Younger children will probably exclaim to like one set when they are actually only enjoying the color or design of it. It will be up to you to decide what features need to be included in the pieces that will go into your child’s space and then you can find those practical pieces in the finish or style they found attractive. This way both you and your child will be satisfied in the end result.

Let’s face it; you won’t be living in your child’s bedroom so how it looks and feels to your child is what is ultimately important. Allowing your child to participate in all of the phases of decision making concerning their bedroom will help your child feel like the room really belongs to them. They will enjoy their space so much more and will appreciate it as the years pass. Kids know what they like and parents know what’s best for them. This is a great way to bring together both in a compromise that will please everyone.
